Portrait of Zofia Neugebauer with her flute
Biography

Polish flautist Zofia Neugebauer brings fresh perspectives to well-known repertoire and sets it beside music of her own, in which electronics and her voice extend the sound of the flute. Alongside her solo career, she is a chamber musician and principal flute of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. With the Utopia Orchestra, she appears as guest principal flute. In the words of The Flute View, every phrase she plays breathes ‘as if spun effortlessly from the air itself’. Her debut album, Il Vento non Scritto, with Mozart’s flute concertos and two compositions of her own, appeared on Berlin Classics in April 2026.

Zofia has made solo appearances at the Musikverein Wien, the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Philharmonie Berlin, and with orchestras including Camerata Zürich and the Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin. At the Verbier Festival, she has played chamber music with Martin Fröst, Lahav Shani and Anastasia Kobekina. An alumna of the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker, she now lives in Paris.

Polish flautist Zofia Neugebauer brings fresh perspectives to well-known repertoire and sets it beside music of her own, in which electronics and her voice extend the sound of the flute. Alongside her work as a soloist, she is a chamber musician and principal flute of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. In the words of The Flute View, every phrase she plays breathes ‘as if spun effortlessly from the air itself’.

Her debut album, Il Vento non Scritto, appeared on Berlin Classics in April 2026 and was widely reviewed. Zofia recorded Mozart’s Flute Concertos K 313 and K 314 with the Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen under Johannes Klumpp, in a historically informed reading with the orchestra playing without vibrato. She wrote the cadenzas herself, and the two pieces that frame the concertos, Cadence Libre and the title piece, take up their material and develop it with electronics and her own voice. ‘For me, creativity is not ornament,’ Zofia says. ‘It is a way to understand music more deeply and to meet the audience more honestly.’ Mundoclasico praised her ‘exceptional understanding of sound’, and Ö1 heard ‘a fresh wind in Mozart’s flute concertos’.

In the 2025/26 season, she made her debut at the Musikverein Wien with the Pannon Philharmonic, toured Germany with the Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin and returned to the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava. The 2026/27 season opened with a tour of the Czech Republic with the Jove Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona and her debut at the Palau de la Música Catalana. In December 2026, she makes her debut with the Izmir Chamber Orchestra, and in March 2027 with the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt under Johannes Klumpp.

As a soloist, she has also appeared with orchestras including the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, Sinfonietta Cracovia, the Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc, the Philharmonisches Orchester Vorpommern, Camerata Zürich and the Silesian Philharmonic, and made her debut in the Kammermusiksaal of the Philharmonie Berlin with the Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin. Her concertos range from the Baroque and Classical periods through French Romanticism to music of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Zofia has returned to the Verbier Festival every summer since 2018. In 2025, she gave a chamber music programme there with Martin Fröst, Lahav Shani and Anastasia Kobekina. At the Festival Ravel, she played with Bertrand Chamayou, and her partners also include the harpists Magdalena Hoffmann and Julia Łopuszyńska and the harpsichordist Diego Ares. She has also appeared at the Gstaad New Year Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Dresdner Musikfestspiele and the Kissinger Sommer.

An alumna of the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker, where she was mentored by Emmanuel Pahud and Mathieu Dufour, Zofia has played principal flute with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Sinfonieorchester Basel, and performs regularly with Teodor Currentzis’s Utopia Orchestra. In these roles and with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, she has worked with conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Iván Fischer, Paavo Järvi and Gábor Takács-Nagy.

Teaching is a steady part of Zofia’s work. Her own flute course, launched in 2024, is booked out shortly after each announcement and draws students from across Europe; the 2025 edition was developed with trumpeter Simon Höfele. She also gives masterclasses where she appears as a soloist, at flute conventions and at international conferences, in 2027 among them in Valladolid and São Paulo. As an ambassador for Bärenreiter and on social media, she shares her work and the everyday life of a musician with a wider audience.

Zofia was born in Wodzisław Śląski. She studied with Felix Renggli at the Hochschule für Musik Basel. Her studies were supported by scholarships from the Polish Ministry of Culture, the Mozart-Gesellschaft Dortmund and Villa Musica. She lives in Paris and plays a flute by Muramatsu.
